Graf Art
By Andre Pinard
Have you ever 'read' a piece of street art? According to some, street art (AKA graffiti) is sign of urban blight (decay). For others, street art serves as a canvas for a multi-faceted form of communication. For consumers with an urban mindset who value discovery, self-expression, versatility, openness and connectivity, graffiti is a form of creative expression that often times transforms spaces such as walls, store fronts, mail boxes, and light poles into real-time message boards.
Grafers (AKA street artists) once prided themselves (and still do to a large extent) on their internal dialogue, one that kept non-grafers at bay. Recently, this dialogue has expanded its breadth to include those who are non-grafers but seek to engage in a subtly hidden street text. These aerosol messages are now providing road maps for those who are 'in the know.' Street artists are collaborating with exclusive urban clothing boutiques (e.g. Alife, Dave's Quality Meats and Reed Space) in an effort to guide their target audience to their often times hard to find locations.
